Nutrition and Exercise Tips for Weight Loss

We all keep waiting for the invention of a magic pill to help us shed unwanted weight overnight. Regardless of recent medical advances, successful weight loss still remains based on two simple factors: diet and exercise. While medical centers such as MCA offer bariatric surgery to assist with weight loss, it is still up to the patient to change his or her eating habits and adopt a more active lifestyle. Here are some tips for doing just that.

Nutrition: Think Calories

There are numerous fad diets out there that can work over time. However, the one tried and true method lies in simple calorie counting. Speak to your doctor about a suggested calorie intake for you. Then, keep track. Try to maintain that calorie count every day. While calorie counting, don’t forget to:

  • Avoid high caloric sugary drinks—drink water instead
  • Check labels on everything you consume
  • Eat fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Find low-calorie, high-protein snacks that will satiate you in between meals
  • Eat smaller portions at meal times

Exercise: Think Active

You don’t need to be an athlete to get active. And you don’t need to join an expensive gym to get active either. All you need is 30 minutes of physical activity a day for five days a week. Do you still feel intimidated? Don’t forget that these activities count as exercise too:

  • Climbing the stairs
  • Mowing the lawn
  • Biking with your child
  • Going for a swim
  • Walking around the mall or neighborhood

Weight Loss: Think Support

It is important to remember that finding support during your weight loss journey will increase the likelihood that you will stick with your routine. Consider attending a Weight Loss Support Group session at Medical Center Arlington. Meeting times vary, but the next session will be Tuesday, August 2, at 6:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Debra Rundles, Bariatrics Manager, at (817) 472-4934 or debra.rundles@hcahealthcare.com.
